Hot Club of Mars
The Hot Club of Mars has been together for over a dozen years. The band
has played in many formats ranging from an intimate trio to a ten piece
dance band with a three or four rhythm guitar section and vocalist.
An extremely wide variety of music has been heard to come from the group
- everything from Django to Romanian gypsy music to Calypso to just
plain Martian standards (which are only "plain" to us).
For this occasion, we will be a quartet presenting another side of the
wide spectrum of Gypsy Jazz.
On violin, Lache
Cercel. Lache is Romanian born, a third generation violinist in his
family and a true virtuoso in the music of his culture. I think I would
describe Lache simply as "The Real Thing". In five years of
playing music with Lache, I have been constantly astounded time and
time again.
Sam Shoichet on
bass. Sam is a journeyman bassist; at home in just about any type of
band, his bass skills include bowing and the "slam" technique.
He is a part time graphics designer by day.
Don Ogilvie on lead
guitar. Don has played guitar since age ten or so, and has played it
all at one time or another in his life. His mastery of just about any
style of jazz is formidable, but never so much as when he is playing
Hot Club style.
Michael Dunn on
rhythm guitar. Most of my life has been spent making guitars professionally.
Playing semi professionally all this time, I eventually fell into Django's
music where I seem to have stayed for many years now. We all reside
in Vancouver, Canada. And without revealing our ages, suffice it to
say that we seem to have just about a century and a half of collective
musical experience behind us.
