The Hot Club of Hulaville is Hawaii’s answer to the call to Gypsy Jazz. Thursday evening Djangofest Northwest will feature a touch of island-fever mixed with a dash of saucy Argentina as the Hot Club of Hulaville plays with special guest star Gonzalo Bergara.

Not content simply being a Django cover band, HCOH is exploring very real links of the phenomenon of Django’s music on guitarists the world-over and the reciprocal contributions of Hawaiian musicians. After all, Hawaii had its indigenous music adapting to and being adopted by the likes of Duke Ellington - and most interestingly - by Country and Western bands of the era. As a result of this cross- pollination from the Continents and the Coasts, the Hawaiian Jump Swing style was born, and became an important cultural contribution to world music. This is the musical DNA that HCOH is decoding.

Formed at the beginning of 2008 they have rapidly elbowed their way (with a smile) onto the local scene with fabulous art, infectious sound, and very high style. With its fedoras, suspenders, languid chanteuses and frenetic swing with some highbrow elegance and class, this band has propelled into a somewhat unanticipated success. The public was obviously ready to be challenged and to answer the call. As a result, the band sells out most of its shows. The band’s high production values include backdrops that are both imposing and stunning, arrangements and theatricality unseen since the Territory days, and of course, just simple great musicianship and vocals.

Whether it’s the Great American Songbook, Café Tango, or traditional Roma (aka Gypsy) the band delivers in high-style to standing ovations.
