The
Dudley Hill Memorial Music Endowment
The mission of the Dudley Hill Memorial Music Endowment is to select, reward
and encourage outstanding young musicianship. Established in 2005 by the
DjangoFest Northwest music festival, the fund seeks to recognize Mr. Hill's
tremendous contribution to Gypsy Jazz, the style of music established by the
late Django Reinhardt. The endowment consists of and is augmented by
contributions made to the endowment in Dudley's memory.
Funds and/or musical instruments from the Endowment will be awarded to
exceptional young artists for support, training, development, and/or
education in music, with special emphasis on Gypsy Jazz. Funds can be used
to cover tuition, travel, and related educational costs. In addition the
recipient will perform some musical selections when they receive their
award.
Annual scholarships and/or instruments will be awarded during the annual
DjangoFest Northwest festival, with the amount and/or instrument based on
availability. Applications are accepted at WICA during the months of October
through June. A committee comprised of DjangoFest NW Artistic Director, WICA
Board of Directors Scholarship Chair, WICA Executive Director, and selected
members of the music community, will review the applications during July,
with decisions for funding based on the following criteria:
- Musical excellence
- Feasibility of project
- Financial need
- Community benefit
- Clarity of proposal
Eligible candidates must be between the ages of 15-25. Applications must include a recorded sample of playing, written statement and photo. Submitted material will not be returned. If there are no suitable applications in any given year the Committee will withhold an award, and those funds will remain in the Endowment.
Dudley
Hill - Guitar (1948-2005)
From Tacoma, Washington, Dudley Hill has always
been at home on the acoustic guitar, with his first recording being a collection
of American fiddle tunes, entitled From a Northern Family. Dudley was a
founding member of Pearl Django, helped shape the
sound of the band, and contributed a number of fine compositions to the Pearl
Django repertoire. Dudley retired from Pearl Django in 2004 for health reasons.
In January 2005 Dudley lost his long, hard fought battle with cancer. Dudley was
a wonderful artist and human being and will be missed by all of us.
